N97 mini – Human Research Department Experiment
Tom and Riccardo from WOMWolrd blew my mind on Wednesday night, by having me serenaded by a mariachi band out side my place of work. Not only did the mariachi band draw a small crowd, but the camera crew that came with them (from nokia) created a smile on my face, the intensity of which I don’t think I have ever experienced before.
Having no idea what was happening, Tom handed me an N97 mini as part of the Nokia Human Research Department Experiment. I must say I was totally lost words and very embarrassed *(^_^)*.
I’ve been told by Riccardo that the details of the filming will all be revealed when the final editing has been completed.
As you all know the N97 mini recently won the “Best Mobile Broadband Handset/Device award at the Asian mobile awards for 2009, so it’s a pretty exciting device to now have.
I must admit however that the N97 mini has always been a device that I have over looked and thought of as the baby brother to the N97. I could not have been more wrong. To start with lets just say The N97 Mini is miles of head it’s brother in sexiness and build quality…

Wish I lived in the UK. Nokia life in the US sucks. I don’t have a device at all, and waiting on my N900, and here you are getting another one?! Lucky duck…
On another note, told you Nokia likes you. Feels good to be loved. You weren’t making a fool of yourself afterall, huh? Can I borrow your cardboard shirt, now? LOL

Must say having help the Mini in my hands a couple of weeks ago in a local Vodafone store, and bounced around it’s GUI, for me the Mini is still the N97s’ little bro’. Don’t let me take anything away from the mini, the build quality feels more like an “E” than an “N”, but I still like the feel of the N97 in my hand. I like the way that when holding the N97 the bottom edge of the camera surround rests nicely on your fingers. I accept the mini is a little prettier, but maybe some of this really comes down to the fact that it is newer and we’ve got used to the look of the N97. New stuff always looks niceer than older stuff.
My understanding, correctme if I’m wrong, is that the inards of the two devices is VERY similar. The functionality is VERY similar and the possible reason the Mini would win in Japan rather than the N97 is the had size, in the same way that Microsoft had to make a smaller Xbox controller for the Asian market.
The two of the main issues with the N97 (Lens protector/harmer and poor GPS) can both be corrected free of charge, under warranttee. Not have got hold of the v20 FW yet as my N97 is UK Voda branded I expect to love my N97 even more after that.
I suppose what I am saying is in my opinion the N97 and N97 mini are brothers like the different versions of iPod as long as you get the N97 issues corrected by Nokia. A contact of mine even suggested that the FW for the N97 and N97 mini was the same other than Product Code type differences rather than model typr differences.
I’ll stop the rant here, but I’ll be interested to see your comparison review.

I’m actually waiting for a replacement N97 to arrive as my other one I have issues with the camera. Software wise so far from what I can tell the devices are pretty much the same. The N97 mini seems faster and more responsive than my N97 (v20), once again this could just be because I have a fault N97.
I’ll post more information when get time to finish the review…
